PPC&F - All Dressed Up - Summer Trainers

Happy Saturday, friends!  I hope that you are doing something fun and relaxing this weekend!

This week, All Dressed Up Digital Stamps is sponsoring us over at Passionate Paper Creations & Friends.  I was so excited to get to create with the Summer Trainers digital stamp.  It is so incredibly beautiful!

Clean and simple (CAS) cards are a huge struggle for me.  I have a hard time with white space, but I wanted the image to be the star of this show, so I went for it.
I colored the image with Copics (colors listed below) and adhered the card front to a shimmery black panel.  I die-cut the sentiment from the same black card stock using the Altenew Signature Words dies.  I finished by adding some Obsidian Rhinestones from Honey Bee Stamps.
Copics Used:
Shoes: V09, V06, V04, V01, N8, C2, C1, C0
Blue Flowers:  B69, B66, B63, B60, G07, YG25, YG11, YG00
Daisies:  G07, YG25, YG11, YG00, YR23, YR21, YR24, 0
I hope that you will hope come visit us at Passionate Paper Creations & Friends to check out the rest of the AMAZING inspiration that the Design Team has cooked up for you.  Oh, and while you are at it, check out the surprise that All Dressed Up has provided for our members (it will be in the pinned posts)!  Not a member?  That's OK... It's not too late to join and be able to take advantage of the surprise!
As always, thanks so much for stopping by!

Product Spotlight: Simple Coloring Stencils - Megan's Papercraft Treasures

 Hi friends!

The Design Team has been asked to spotlight a favorite product each month. For the month of August, I chose simple coloring stencils, as they seem to be my new obsession!  I absolutely love the versatility of them, and how simple they make it to create something incredible!

All three of these cards were made using the same stencil(s) and color scheme (with the exception of changing the tulip color) and I love how they look completely different.

I decided that rather than just telling you why I love this project, I would show you in a photo tutorial.  I created two mini slimline cards from one stenciled image, and the entire process to make the two cards took me less than 20 minutes.

For these cards, I used the Altenew Craft Your Life Project Kit:  Seasonal Blooms.  This AMAZING kit comes with a 6 x 8 stamp set, coordinating dies, coordinating 3D embossing folder, and the simple coloring stencils.

To start, I wanted to share a few products that I find extremely helpful when working with stencils.

The first supply that I make sure I have on hand when using stencils, or doing any ink blending, for that matter, is a hack I found somewhere and it was a total game changer.  I bought a light adhesive Cricut mat on Amazon and I cut it into 6 x 6 pieces.  This is perfect for placing my card stock down as the light adhesive holds it in place, but doesn't tear it when I lift it.
I also keep a supply of Post-It Notes handy, as they are perfect for covering areas that you don't want to accidentally blend ink over.
I tend to use a combination of finger daubers and makeup blending brushes (also purchased on Amazon).
Ok, let's get started!  Cut two card bases from heavyweight card stock.  I cut my bases to 6 1/4" x 6 1/2", scoring the 6 1/2" side at 3 1/4".  The card base will be 3 1/4" x 6 1/4".
1.  Adhere a 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" panel of smooth white card stock to a cricut mat (if you don't have a spare Cricut mat, put some painter's tape under your card stock panel to hold it in place) and line the 1st layering stencils up on the bottom and left edges.  Use painter's tape to hold the stencil in place so that it doesn't shift while applying ink.
2.  Using the lightest color of the sunflower (Sunray), apply to the sunflower petals, starting at the base of the petals with the heaviest color, and lighter at the tips.
3.  Using the lightest color for the small flowers (Dew Drops), apply using a fairly light hand to the appropriate areas.
4.  Using the lightest of the pink shades (Baby Pink), apply color to the Tulips, again, darker at the base, lighter at the tips.
5.  Remove the first stencil gently, clean it,  and set it aside.
6.  If your card stock shifted, line it back up.  Line up the second stencil along the bottom and left side and tape it down, as in the first step.
7.  Using the darker of the sunflower colors (Snapdragon), again apply color darkest at the base of the petals, lightest at the tips.
8.  Using the darker of the blues (Aqualicious), apply to the small flowers.
9.  Using the darkest pink (Fuschia), apply to the tulips, again darkest at the base of the petals, lightest at the tips.
10.  Carefully remove the stencil, clean and set aside.
11.  As in the first step, line up the third stencil on the bottom and left edges of the card stock.
12 - 14.  Using a brown (Hazelnut), apply a light layer to the centers of the sunflowers and add an additional layer to the edges to add some depth.  Using the lightest green (Lime), apply to the leaves and stems, darker at the base and lightest at the tips.  With the darker green (Fresh Leaf), add a layer at the base of the leaves.   Using a different (or the same) shade of yellow (Chamomile), apply to the centers of the small flowers.
15.  Gently remove the stencil, clean and set aside.
16.  Using the coordinating die, die-cut the image and remove the cut away areas.
17.  Trim the edges of the stenciled image and cut it in half.  (This part was painful, but I promise it is worth it!)
18.  Cut two panels of smooth white card stock to 3" x 6".  Pick your favorite shade of Distress Oxide Ink (Kitsch Flamingo) for a background.
19.  Ink blend your background on the white panels to create some soft dimension behind your stenciled images.
20.  Adhere the stenciled images to the ink-blended panels.   (This will make it easier to determine where to place your sentiment.)
21.  Stamp your sentiment on the panel in black ink.

 22.  Adhere the card panels to your card bases.
I know this looks like a long process, but it truly is very quick and easy!
This is another card that I made, using the same stencil and the same colors (except the tulips).  The main difference in this card is that I used the coordinating 3D embossing folder prior to using the stencils.  I LOVE how this card has an entirely different look.

Bookworm Card and Bookmark

Greetings, crafty friends!  Anyone that knows me knows that I am an avid reader.  I can often be found with my nose stuck in a book.  I have been having the most fun working on a gift for a really special friend!  She is an indie author and has written some of my favorite contemporary books.   I wanted to send her something to brighten her day and when I saw the Altenew Tall Tale stamp set, I knew that I had to use it to make something for her.  The card was inspired by Karen Brown's slimline card and the bookmark was inspired by Teri Kozler's.

I started with a panel of white card stock and stamped the bookshelf three times, making sure to get different parts of the shelf.  I then colored in the images using my Altenew Artist Alcohol Markers.  I wanted the card to be bright and cheerful, so I used more colors than I can list!  (OK, truthfully, I didn't write them down.)
I adhered my panel to a black card base and stamped the sentiment on a small white panel, layered on black card stock and attached it to my card.  For the inside of the card, I stamped my sentiment and the cute little glasses on a white panel and adhered it to the inside of the card base.  I haven't figured out how to take a good photo of the inside of a card, so I don't usually include that, but I had to share how cute it is with the glasses.
To make the bookmark, I laid out my stamps how I wanted them so that I could determine the size of my panel.  I created masks for the girl and the stack of books by stamping them on copy paper and fussy cutting them out, then set aside.  Using my stamping platform, I arranged my stamps, taking into consideration which image that I wanted in the forefront.  (This is a technique I learned in my last AECP course- Seasonal Scene Building!)  For the bookmark, the girl is in the front, so I placed her first and lined up the books on top to get the placement correct.  I removed the books and stamped the girl.  I then placed the mask over the girl and lined up the stack of books and stamped them "under" her.
I colored my images with my Artist Alcohol Markers, again, striving for bright, cheerful colors.  I didn't care for so much white space, so I decided to use the Altenew Whimsical Herringbone stamp set to add a background.  I placed my masks over the girl and the stack of books, inked up my background stamp in Limestone, and stamped it over my masked images.  I then added my sentiment to the bookmark panel.   I adhered the stamped panel to a slightly larger black panel and punched a hole at the top, so that I could attach some trim.
To say that I am in love with these stamps and this project would be a huge understatement!  I was really excited to use some of the techniques that I have learned in my AECP journey, and I know that I will use these stamps time and time again.

Clean and Simple Boutique Cards - AECP Level 1

I am so excited to say that I have been accepted into the Altenew Educator Certification Program (AECP)!  What does this mean?  It is an extensive program that has 4 levels, consisting of multiple classes, projects, and a final challenge at the end of each level.  I am just beginning on this journey, and my hope is that I will learn some new techniques, improve my skills, and become more confident in sharing my work with you!

For the first course, I chose Clean and Simple Boutique Cards.  The Clean and Simple (CAS) concept is something that I really love, but is a huge struggle for me,  I have a hard time leaving white space, so I felt this would be a great starting point for me.

For my project, I am using the Stamped Background concept as my inspiration.  Jennifer shared some excellent tips throughout this course.  The one that influenced me the most was to mark the center-point of my card layer and go from there.  I know that sounds ridiculously simple, but it was a game changer for me.  I have found stamped backgrounds to be very challenging, as I like everything to be in a nice straight line.  I tried to challenge myself to not focus on that and to be a “little” bit random.

I started out using the Altenew Mini Delight: Precious Florette stamp set.  This was the first Mini Delight I received with my subscription; however, I hadn’t used it yet, so I thought it would be perfect for this project.  I inked my image with Versafine Onyx Black (very important not to use a water-based ink if you will be watercoloring or the ink will run and all your hard work will be for nothing) and stamped somewhat randomly all over my card layer.

I then inked up some acrylic blocks with the colors I wanted to use.  I literally just smooshed my ink pad onto the block.  I then spritzed the blocks with water and used a water-painter to pick up some color.  I added a splotch of color to each gem, and was not particularly careful, as I wanted it to have the loose feeling of watercolor.  Once dry, I added a hint of sparkle using my Wink of Stella brush.

I heat embossed the sentiment from the set using Wow Opaque White Ultra Fine embossing powder on a black strip of cardstock and adhered across the lower portion of my card panel using liquid glue. Finally, I attached the panel to my card base using liquid glue.

I actually made a few attempts at this card before I was finally happy with the result.  A few lessons learned: if not using watercolor paper, use heavyweight cardstock (110#).  Anything lighter and it buckles with the water. A little bit of water goes a long way - the more water you add, the less vibrant the color.

I really enjoyed this course, and am looking forward to trying some more of the techniques that I learned!
